Organizations believe that as much as 45% of all their corporate data is held on endpoint devices. These laptops, tablets and smartphones pose arguably the largest risk to data security.

The risks presented by the endpoint are a growing concern in government data security. This past month, The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released draft publications on how to securely support the growing use of mobile devices and telework at federal agencies, following research that indicates the problem of gaining visibility into the endpoint.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), whose Cybersecurity Framework is becoming the standard in the federal government, as well as more than half the private sector, has drafted two publications addressing mobility, BYOD and the threats these smartphones, tablets and laptops pose to data security. It was estimated that 20% of K-12 classrooms would have integrated BYOD programs by the end of 2015, with the promise of being able to deliver on digital curriculum without the capital expense of 1:1 programs. Unfortunately, BYOD has come with more challenges to the K-12 classroom than anticipated.

The changing demographic in the workforce, combined with mobility and the rise in 24/7 working, has caused many organizations to adopt flexible work policies, with employees telecommuting all or part of the time, and increasing the use of contractors as an alternative to employees.
